CSBAA Launches Certified AI Practitioner Program — Registration Now Open

By CSBAA Programs Team6 min read

After extensive curriculum development and pilot cohorts with founding member organizations, CSBAA opens registration for its four-level certification pathway — Canada's first small-business-focused AI certification standard.

Canada's First SME-Focused AI Certification

The Canadian Small Business AI Association is proud to announce the official launch of the Certified AI Practitioner program, a professional certification pathway designed specifically for employees and teams at small and medium-sized enterprises. Registration is now open for all four certification levels, from foundational AI literacy through workflow design, governance, and organizational AI leadership.

The Four-Level Pathway

The foundational level is designed for employees new to AI tools, covering core concepts, practical prompt literacy, and responsible use principles. The second level builds on that foundation with hands-on workflow design using AI tools appropriate to the participant's industry context. The third level addresses the organizational layer: governance frameworks, privacy-compliant data practices, vendor evaluation, and risk management. The leadership tier is designed for founders, executives, and senior managers responsible for setting AI strategy and policy. Each level is delivered as a structured cohort with capped enrolment to preserve interactive learning quality.

How the Curriculum Was Developed

The pathway is the product of an extended development period: curriculum drafting with practitioner input, consultation with founding member organizations, and pilot cohorts run through 2024 whose participant feedback directly reshaped the applied exercises and assessment design. The result is a program built around real Canadian workplace tasks rather than abstract tool tours — and a structure that assumes participants have day jobs, not research time.

Enrollment and Funding

Cohorts are delivered live online across Canada. Member organizations are encouraged to explore funding support through the Canada Job Grant, which covers a substantial portion of eligible training costs in most provinces, and through provincial programs. CSBAA staff are available to assist member organizations with grant applications. Priority registration for the first cohort cycle is available to existing CSBAA members.

Looking Forward

The launch of the Certified AI Practitioner program marks a significant step in CSBAA's mission to make structured, credible AI workforce development accessible to Canadian small businesses. With federal AI policy consultations ongoing, establishing a recognized standard for responsible AI practice in the SME sector is both timely and necessary. CSBAA will continue to update the curriculum as the regulatory and technology landscape evolves.
