Why Canada needs an AI training association
The AI training market is crowded and standardless — every vendor a curriculum, no shared bar for quality. The case for doing AI workforce development as an association rather than a marketplace.
A Crowded Market With No Floor
Any Canadian organization that decides to invest in AI training today faces the same problem: an enormous, uneven market with no shared standard. Every vendor has a curriculum, every consultant a framework, and there is no common bar for what a completed course should mean. For small and mid-sized organizations without training departments to evaluate options, the result is either paralysis or a purchase made on marketing.
What an Association Does Differently
An association inverts the model. Instead of each vendor defining quality for itself, members collectively maintain a standard: a certification pathway with defined levels, published criteria, and credentials that mean the same thing from one organization to the next. Training becomes accountable to a standards body rather than a sales target — and the credential a worker earns is portable, because it belongs to a framework rather than a vendor.
Community Is the Other Half
The less visible benefit is the peer network. What AI tools are actually working in a dental practice, a logistics firm, an accounting office? The honest answers rarely appear in vendor case studies — they surface when non-competing businesses compare notes. Roundtables, member forums, and a national conference exist to make that exchange routine rather than accidental.
The Mandate Ahead
CSBAA's mandate is to be that standards body and that community for Canadian small and mid-sized organizations: maintain the certification pathway, publish practical governance guidance, give members a voice in policy consultations, and keep the standard current as the technology moves. This is long-term institutional work, and it is why CSBAA is structured as a member association rather than a training company.
