What actually improves after structured AI training
Patterns from a year of CSBAA cohorts: where the gains show up first, why governance follows multi-level training, and which organizations struggle to sustain new practices.
The First Gains Are Always in Writing
Across the cohorts CSBAA delivered this year, the earliest and most consistent improvements participants report are in writing-heavy work: drafting and reviewing documents, internal communications, and customer-facing content. This is not surprising — these are the tasks where current AI tools are strongest — but it matters for planning: if you want visible wins in the first ninety days, aim the training at the people who write for a living.
Governance Follows Depth, Not Time
A pattern we did not expect when we started: organizations rarely develop real governance just because time passes. The ones that formalize AI use policies are overwhelmingly those whose staff progressed past foundational training into workflow- and governance-level material. Awareness of what can go wrong appears to be a product of depth of training, not duration of exposure. Single-session training produces users; progressive training produces policy.
Who Struggles to Sustain It
The organizations that find it hardest to sustain new practices are the smallest ones — teams under about fifteen people, where nobody has slack to champion and reinforce new workflows after the cohort ends. Rural and remote organizations also face real barriers where programming is delivered in person. Both observations shaped our current programming: virtual-first cohort delivery and a peer-support structure that does not assume a dedicated internal training function.
What This Means for 2026
These observations inform where CSBAA is investing next: expanded virtual cohort delivery, peer networks for small member organizations, and a stronger governance component at every certification level. They are practitioner observations from our own training delivery, not a controlled study — but they are consistent enough, cohort after cohort, that we plan around them.
