CSBAA Releases Practical AI Governance Framework for Member Organizations
The Policy & Standards Committee has released a practical governance framework to help member organizations establish responsible AI use policies and oversight structures.
Why This Framework
As AI tool adoption accelerates across Canadian organizations, the absence of clear governance structures is emerging as a significant risk — both operationally and reputationally. CSBAA's Policy & Standards Committee developed this framework in response to member feedback, which consistently identified governance as the most urgent gap in organizational AI readiness.
Framework Overview
The CSBAA Practical AI Governance Framework is organized around four components: Policy Foundation (defining acceptable use, data handling, and oversight roles), Accountability Structure (assigning governance responsibilities to roles or committees), Risk Assessment (identifying high-impact AI applications and applying appropriate review), and Continuous Review (establishing a cadence for updating policies as capabilities evolve). The framework is designed to be implementable by organizations without dedicated legal or compliance departments.
What the Framework Includes
The full framework document includes a model AI use policy template that organizations can adapt, a governance responsibility assignment matrix, a risk classification guide for common AI applications, and a self-assessment checklist for quarterly review. The framework is not prescriptive — it is designed to be right-sized for the organization using it, from a five-person professional services firm to a 500-person healthcare organization.
Access and Implementation Support
The framework is available to all CSBAA members via the member portal. Organizational members can request a facilitated governance review session with the CSBAA Policy & Standards team. CSBAA will also offer a half-day governance workshop at the 2026 National Conference in October. Questions can be directed to membership@ciai.ca.
